Sweet and Sustainable: Rocher Goes Green

Ferrero is rethinking packaging: the new 24-piece Ferrero Rocher box focuses on smart sustainability. Instead of polystyrene, it features a lighter polypropylene box – produced using high-speed manufacturing lines. The result? A 40 % reduction in packaging weight and total savings of around 6,000 tonnes of plastic since project launch, according to Mario Abreu, Chief Sustainability Officer at Ferrero.  

Packaging is more than just a wrapper. “It preserves the quality and freshness of our products while also playing a key role in how we communicate with consumers,” says Abreu. And it’s becoming increasingly sustainable, with over 90% of Ferrero’s packaging already designed to be recyclable now.

Sticking Smart: Anti-Slip Adhesive from Hangzhou

At Ferrero’s own facility in Hangzhou, China, a special anti-slip adhesive ensures boxes stay securely stacked during transport – replacing the need for additional plastic wrapping.

“This boosts transport safety, improves recyclability of the carton boxes, and reduces secondary packaging plastic – all without disrupting existing logistics processes,” explains Abreu.

Ambitious Goals

Ferrero has set bold goals: by 2030, the company aims to reduce its direct (Scope 1 and 2) emissions by 50 % (baseline: 2018). For plastic use, the target is a 10 % reduction by the end of 2025 (baseline: 2019/20) and over 90% of packaging designed to be recyclable. Progress is already visible: 86.6 % of the electricity used in production now comes from certified renewable sources, and 90.7 % of packaging is designed to be recyclable.
