On 7 May, the forms presented the top three submitted projects in the context of the SAVE FOOD Congress at Messe Düsseldorf’s Exhibition Centre. On the same day, an expert jury evaluated the projects’ performance in categories such as creativity, topical relevance, outcome and presentation.
The jury consisted of: Prof. Dr. Günther Bachmann, General Secretary of the German Council for Sustainable Development; Burkhard Hintzsche, Deputy Mayor for Youth, Education, Social Affairs and Sport of the State Capital City of Düsseldorf; Valentin Thurn, author and director of the documentary film “Taste the Waste;” Frank Waskow, Scientific Associate for food and environmental issues for Verbraucherzentrale NRW; and Uwe-Jens Ruhnau, Managing Regional News Editor for the Rheinische Post newspaper. Impressed by the excellence of the showcased projects, the jury decided to award two first prizes.
The two first prizes, worth 1,500 euros each, went to the following projects:
“Food waste – is it really necessary?!” – Form 8c at the Görres Gymnasium (Grammar School)
“Food Run App” – Form 10 at the Internationale Schule am Rhein.
The third prize, worth 500 euros, went to the following project:
“Social Sticker” – Form 8a at the Theodor Fliedner Gymnasium (Grammar School).
Werner M. Dornscheidt, President and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, presented the awards on the SAVE FOOD Congress stage.
The SAVE FOOD School Award encouraged the adolescents and pupils to consider how to handle food responsibly. What’s more, by developing their own projects, they’ve actively contributed to the reduction of food losses and food waste – in their school environment, their circle of friends and their family.
In addition, every participating form was invited to learn more about the issue at an informational event on the morning of 7 May. Experienced experts were on hand to show the pupils additional options for preventing food waste and dealing with food sensibly. The SAVE FOOD “Day of Schools” successfully inspired long-term commitment in the fight against food waste.
