Prof. Dr. Günther Bachmann

Launched by then Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in April 2001, the Council was newly appointed by Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel in June 2007. The fifteen-member advisory body and its office in Berlin are tasked with developing contributions to help implement the national sustainable development strategy, suggesting concrete areas for action and projects, and raising awareness for the sustainability issue among the public.

Upon concluding his landscape planning studies at the Technical University Berlin, Günther Bachmann (born in 1955) participated in a variety of research assignments. He joined the Federal Environment Agency in 1983 and was named head of the “Soil Protection” department in 1992. In later years, he was instrumental in the creation of the 1999 Federal Soil Protection Act. On 25 February 2014, Dr. Bachman was appointed honorary professor by Lüneburg University’s foundation.

Dr. Bachmann regularly publishes looseleafs and writes commentaries on the Soil Protection Act as well as essays on a range of issues.
