One of the reasons for the price increase is the drought in the United States. As a result of numerous droughts food prices are rising on a global scale. Only in July, food prices increased by ten percent, the World Bank announced. The price of wheat and corn increased from June to July by 25 percent each, soybeans by 17 percent. In some countries, prices had shot particularly strong in the air: In Mozambique, the price of corn has risen by 113 percent within a month. "In the meantime, the Sahel Zone and East Africa experience steep price increases for millet: 220 percent and 180 percent in South Sudan in Sudan, for example," says the World Bank. Only the rice prices went down by four percent.

The German government together with its leading development agency the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit” (GIZ) put SAVE FOOD in the spotlight at their first international Bonn2011 Nexus Conference. The conference is an important contribution to the Rio+20-summit in 2012, according to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The bottom line: in a transformative process towards a green economy, a focus on the issue of food waste and losses is a requisite.

Fighting food losses can be an effective contribution to relieve the situation of low-income regions in the context of high food prices. Therefore the FAO invited the SAVE FOOD initiative to hold a seminar taking place in Rome on October 21 during the celebrations of the World Food Day. Experts from international organisations and research institutions will listen to the input of three SAVE FOOD speakers.
